Yellow Bags October

Each month we invite you to take home a yellow reusable grocery bag and bring it back with a donation.  Many months we ask for non-perishable food, but October is different. This month we ask you to bring unopened packages of adult-sized socks and underwear for guests at the HumanKind Ministries homeless shelter.  (HumanKind was formerly Interfaith Ministries.)

Jacob’s Learning Ladder News

Each year we pick a different color for our school T-shirt. This year we decided to switch things up and tie-dye our shirts. The children had so much fun seeing their finished product. The teachers had just as much fun, if not more tie-dying their T-shirts and even masks! We are really looking forward to wearing them on our field trip to the Zoo this spring.

Fall is here, and the children are enjoying exploring outside and looking for signs of the changing season. After exploring and collecting they created artwork with their findings.

At the beginning of each school year we talk about community helpers: who they are, what they do, and how they help our community. After learning about and discussing community helpers, the children are found acting out different community helper roles.

We are looking forward to our upcoming parent/teacher conferences and annual Book Fair. This year we set the fair up in the Teen Center, so plese stop by and help us raise money to support our classroom libraries with new books and classroom supplies. The fair runs October 5-13.

Blessing of the Animals: Sunday, October 18 at 2 pm

Join us Sunday, October 18, at 2 pm, on the east lawn for a Blessing of the Animals.  All pets are welcome and must be on a leash or held in arms.

Pastor Catherine Neelly Burton offers a blessing to each animal and owner as well as a time of thanksgiving for our animals.  This brief time of worship is a wonderful way to celebrate God’s creation.

Session Minute Summaries

Session Updates: August

Session Summary August 17, 2020

  • The Session met via Zoom and began and ended the meeting with prayer.
  • We received a report from the music task force. They met twice before Sean Foster left.  Based on the most recent studies available the task force recommends that we allow masked singing in worship.  The most recent data shows that singing while wearing a well-fitting mask is no more dangerous that talking in a wellfitted mask. Social distancing rules still apply. If a group (band or singers) rehearse, singing should be limited to 30 minutes in one space. The Session voted on this recommendation, and it passed with a majority.
  • We received a Deep Roots campaign update.
  • We received an update on the first evening worship service.
  • There was a motion to return to in person worship on September 13 at 9 am and 11 am. The motion was then amended.  The amended motion was to have one indoor in-person service and one outdoor in-person service Sept 13, Sept 20 (outdoor at OJ Watson Park), and Sept 27.  This motion passed unanimously.  The indoor service continues to be streamed.
  • The Christian Discipleship Team will offer a class called The Good Neighbor Experiment. One hope is that this class furthers conversations that started with the 14-Day challenge.
  • The financial reports were approved and received.
  • We have several candidates for the interim music coordinator position.
  • Darcy Eads and Fred Heismeyer served as delegates to the August Presbytery of Southern Kansas meeting, which was held on zoom. They reported.  This was the first big introduction of the new Presbytery Executive, Gail Doering.
  • The nominating team has begun its work.
  • The Session revisited the issue of Grace being a voting site for November. We are a voting site for the election (and early voting.)
