Invitation to the Old Testament Bible Study

oldAre you interested in an in-depth Bible Study?  This fall Pastor Catherine Neelly Burton invites you to join her for “Invitation to the Old Testament.”  This is nine-week overview of the Old Testament.  It is part of the Disciple Curriculum and is like the “Invitation to Psalms” that was offered in 2016 and “Invitation to John” in 2018.  It is a study that emphasizes knowledge and faith formation.

Participants who engage in this study gain knowledge and confidence about the Bible. This Bible study requires a high commitment and won’t be for everyone. The commitment is a weekly class of one hour and fifteen minutes and a couple of hours of homework a week.  We won’t read all of the Old Testament in class, but we will read a lot.  It is fine to miss a class on occasion, but you need to make at least 75% of the classes.

Materials for the class are a study Bible and study guide.  The guides may be purchased at Grace for $15.  A kindle version of the book is available through Amazon.

The classes meet on Tuesdays at 10 am or Wednesdays at 6 pm.  Classes begin the week of September 8 with an overview session. Sign-ups begin in early August.  Look for more information on a bulletin board at church, in Grace this Week, or by calling Catherine, 684-5215. Childcare is available for class upon request.

Red Cross Blood Drive: August 18

  • Every two seconds someone in the US needs blood.
  • One pint of blood (the approximate amount given in a donation) can be used to help up to three people.
  • About 1/3 of the US population is eligible to give blood.
  • Five million patients in the US need blood every year.

On August 18 we host a Red Cross Blood drive at Grace from 8 am – 1 pm.  Sign up to donate on Sundays at Grace, by calling the office – 684-5215, or by going here: https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/drive-results?zipSponsor=67208

You may use the “rapid pass” and save time on the day of your donation.  Go to redcrossblood.org/RapidPass to finish the pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online before coming to your appointment.

Mission Distribution Team Updates

Each year you have the opportunity make a pledge to Grace.  You may make a pledge to give financially to the general budget, which supports the majority of our ministry and mission, and you may give to the mission budget, which supports an array of mission.

You regularly receive updates on the general budget.  At the halfway point in the year the Mission Distribution Team wants to share with you where we stand with the mission budget.

There are some missions we support every year, and then every year we change our focus for some of our giving. This year we focus on prevention.

Shelley Duncan chairs this team, and Catherine Neelly Burton staffs it.  We’re looking for new members, so talk to Catherine or Shelley if you want to join.

Presbyterian Triennium

This July 16-20 thousands of Presbyterian youth and adults gather in West Lafayette, Indiana, for Triennium.  Triennium is held every three years and brings together youth and adults from around the country for worship, fellowship, study, play, and service.  It’s an incredible opportunity for young people to see the church beyond the local congregation.

This year, five of our youth and two adults are at Triennium with the delegation from the Presbytery of Southern Kansas.  You may read more of the history of Triennium here.  Grace member Laurie Haury went to the first Triennium in 1980, and Laurie Mulford followed in 1983.  Catherine Neelly Burton was there in 1995, and Dave McIntire has served as a small group leader.

Is there anyone else who’s been?
