Yellow Bag Sundays

October 2019 Yellow Bag Sundays

Each month on the first Sunday you’re encouraged to take home a re-usable yellow grocery bag, put some non-perishable items in it, and bring it back the next week, or soon thereafter.

In November, we’re sending Darcy Eads to Cuba along with a member of the Marion Presbyterian Church.  They represent the Presbytery of Southern Kansas at a Cuba Network Conference.

They will take things to share with the people they meet in the Cuban churches. Their requests include: Vitamins for children and adults, 81 mg aspirin, glucosamine, over the counter arthritis medication, antacids, antidiarrheals, Desitin, triple antibiotic ointment, bandages, and gauze.  If you have questions, contact Darcy Eads.

If you prefer to bring food, we will save it for the Operation Holiday food drive in November.

Morning Worship

Bus Tickets and Morning Worship: October 15

Each month Grace distributes bus tickets to people in our community.  This happens on the 15th of the month, or if the 15th is on a weekend we meet the Friday before. Volunteers and those receiving tickets begin to gather around 6:30 am in the Grace Alcove. Guests are greeted with smiles, coffee, water, and a place to sit. Tickets are distributed at 7:50 am.

We can always use volunteers to help with set-up, clean-up, and ticket distribution.  Want to help?  Contact Kirk Anderson, kirk@mygpc.org or 684-5215.

youth

Youth Confirmation Class

Youth Confirmation is the opportunity for youth, eighth grade to high school, to take a snapshot of where they are in the faith, explore possibilities to grow their faith, and to understand the church universal and how Grace and their participation partner together to make this a better house of God.

If your youth is interested, please contact Kirk Anderson or Pastor Catherine Neelly Burton for more information. The classes start near the end of October and finish mid-April.  We meet Sunday afternoons from 1:30 to 3 pm along with two-three church visits.

peace

Peace and Global Witness Offering: October 6

On Sunday, October 6, we celebrate World Communion Sunday.  Along with siblings in faith around the globe we share the Lord’s Supper in worship. We also receive the Peace and Global Witness Offering.  This offering is one of the PCUSA offerings we receive every year. Fifty percent of the received offering goes to the national church for peacemaking efforts around the globe. Twenty-five percent goes to the Presbytery of Southern Kansas for peacemaking efforts in the region. The Grace Mission Distribution Team determines how to use the remaining 25%.

This year the Mission Distribution Team designates our percentage for the Center for Combating Human Trafficking at Wichita State University.

excavation station

Excavation Station

On Sunday, September 8, we unveiled the Excavation Station Sunday School Room.  For many years Room 206 was known as the Windjammer Room, and now it has new occupants and a new name.

A year ago we began to look closely at safety and security of our Sunday morning classes.  For many years older elementary children met for Sunday School in the Tower Room. It was decorated as a medieval tower and very fun. It was however, not the safest as there was no way out in a fire. The class that met up there began to meet in another second-floor room while a plan was made.

Pastor Jennifer Snook recruited woodworkers and artists to help turn Room 206 into an Indiana Jones type room for our children.  Throughout the spring and summer, construction, painting, and artifact acquisition took place. Now it’s ready for study, fellowship, and faith development. Stop by and visit!
