In April we completed our 20th year of the Grace Tutoring Ministry. This ministry partners adults with students from Hyde Elementary School to work on reading skills. A staff member from Hyde walks the children over on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Here they are greeted with a snack and friendly faces. Then, each child spends 45 minutes to an hour reading with an adult. Again this year our students made incredible strides in their reading.
Each year we evaluate the ministry and consider its future. We know that children benefit from this program and that adult volunteers do, too. What we don’t know is if we have enough volunteers to make the program work for another year. Most years we look to recruit two-four new tutors. This year we need five-seven.
If you are interested in tutoring or learning more, contact Catherine Neelly Burton (catherine@mygpc.org), Lib Hooper (hooper3246@cox.net), or Jan Horner (janhorner@gmail.com). It is not a requirement that tutors be part of Grace, so if you have a friend in the community who might be interested, send them our way.
